It also offers a novel examination of the distinctive characteristics of the elegiac distich in Christian poetry. An extensive commentary compares carm. II,1,50 with various parallels from Gregory's own poetry and from a broader literary tradition, encompassing both pagan and Christian sources. Key intertextual references are incorporated into the commentary and presented in an apparatus fontium .
