Brève description / annotation

Territorial leasing is often viewed as a peripheral aspect of the Westphalian system of states, but leases and the servitudes associated with them have an important role in preserving the system's integrity. They act as a means for rearranging and managing the use of territorial space to accomodate states' evolving needs without altering boundaries. While territory has often been leased for economic and military reasons, it has rarely been leased with the objective of settling dispute about sovereignty.
